Collecting Midterm Feedback

Midterm evaluations are an often-overlooked instrument for assessment and improvement. Because they are generally formative (that is, their purpose is to determine needs for improvement in the immediate future), and typically not passed along to one’s department, these can be especially valuable.  There are a variety of different ways for you to collect midterm feedback and we describe a few options below.

Mid-Semester Feedback Surveys

One way you can collect feedback is through the use of a feedback survey. You can use GoogleForms, a Qualtrics survey, or even create an anonymous survey on ELMS.  

The TLTC designed the Mid-Semester Evaluation of College Teaching (MSECT), a research-based formative evaluation tool that instructors can use to gather valid, reliable, and actionable feedback on their teaching.  This tool is based on the TLTC's Fearless Teaching Framework and can be downloaded as a free GoogleForm and modified for individual use.  For more information about this free tool for UMD instructors, visit Mid-Semetster Evaluation of College Teaching.

Free Response Feedback

Some people prefer to provide students with the open opportunity to talk about their experiences in the course. If you would like to create your own free response feedback instrument, click here to see three sample midterm evaluations you could use or modify.

 

Collecting End-of-Term Feedback

Online Course Evaluation: CourseEvalUM

The University has recently implemented an online, campus-wide course evaluation system, “CourseEvalUM,” which can be found at courseevalum.umd.edu. The instrument includes 15 questions, 7 student-interest, and 8 administrative-interest; responses to the former are ultimately seen by only students and the instructor, while responses to the latter are also available to administrators. Access to results is driven by participation. Students see reports only when 70% or more of a course’s students complete the evaluation and only if they have completed evaluations for the courses they have taken (this is waived for new students).

The University distributes email notification when the evaluation system is live, instructing students and instructors on the process. Colleges, departments, and instructors will eventually be able to craft their own questions to supplement the 15 campus-wide measures.

To review course reports, visit and log in to CourseEvalUM and access "Reports" on "My Dashboard." Quantitative data are compared against those from “similarly leveled course sections (e.g., all 200-level course sections)” in the home college. Results include a column in which that college-wide mean is provided for comparison with the results from your course.

Please note that if you are not officially listed as a TA or course instructor in the University course registration system (SIS), your students will not be able to fill out a course evaluation for you. For questions about your status of a course that you are teaching, please see your departmental registration coordinator.

Classroom Observations

Having someone observe your class and your teaching can provide beneficial feedback to you, as well as provide both you and the observer with an opportunity to reflect and talk about effective and engaging teaching practices. If you would like a peer to come and observe your class, the TLTC has prepared a guide to help organize and complete peer observations of teaching. You can also schedule a consultation with a TLTC staff member to request that they observe your teaching and provide you with constructive feedback.
