Digital badge: A digital graphic symbolizing completion of a competency-based learning experience or validated participation in and assessment of a learning opportunity.
Earned badge: A digital badge for which a learner has completed all the necessary learning requirements and assessments, and has been given access to accept and share the badge.
Metadata: (generally data that provides information about other data) In digital badging, metadata refers to the comprehensive information embedded within each open badge that combines with the badge image to create a complete digital credential. This includes the badge name, description, criteria, evidence, issuer information, and technical details required by the Open Badges specification. This verifiable information can be evaluated by employers, recruiters, admissions committees, and automated systems to assess a learner's qualifications.

My Badges: A learner's personal account (on badgr.com) where users can view their earned badges and organize collections that can be publicly shared.
Open badges: A standardized digital credentialing system that makes learning achievements accessible, transferable, and portable across platforms. Open Badges enable learners to build a comprehensive, lifelong portfolio of skills and accomplishments that travels with them throughout their educational and professional journey.
Parchment Digital Badges: The software platform used by UMD to manage the creation, distribution, and storage of digital badges as well as any affiliated documentation of learning achievements.
