TLTC Programs for Instructors

Launch Certificate

The TLTC Faculty Launch Program is designed to provide you with a cohesive but customizable series of professional development activities to help advance your teaching, collect evidence of effectiveness, and leverage innovative, evidence-based approaches in your classroom. Coming in May-June, 2023, the TLTC is "launching" the updated version of the certificate. You can get started on the requirements now.

The Launch Program is completely self-paced, and we expect that most faculty take 2-5 years to finish all of the program requirements. Faculty who satisfy all of the Launch Program activities will receive a certificate of completion.

Get started now: 

You can get started in any order, create your own path, and do this at your own pace. TLTC staff are available for questions, consultations, and more. 

1. Learn something new (or in more depth): Attend two TLTC workshops, with at least one from the Diversity & Inclusion series. You will be asked to document and provide a brief reflection and summary. 

2. Consult: Schedule a consultation with the TLTC.

3. Reflect on your Teaching by completing one of the following items to document and share feedback on your teaching:

• Peer Observation
• TLTC Observation
• Small Group Feedback session Instructional Coaching Partnership.
• Arrange a TLTC teaching observation & consultation

4. Course Design: 

Brush up your course design skills by completing at least one of the options below: 

• TLTC Design Sprint.
• TLTC Course Design Retreat (coming soon)
• Other (approved) professional development around course design and pedagogy. 

If you have already completed one or more of these, we will work with you to document, get credit, and see if you want to dig deeper into any particular topic. 

5. Expand your technological skills by attending a Learning Technologies workshop or signing up for a 1-1 Learning Technologies consultation. 

6. Join/participate in a TLTC Faculty Learning Community of your choice in either the fall or spring semester. 

7. Complete two additional elements of your choosing. It could be something from one of the above lists, or an approved alternative. 

8. Create or update your teaching portfolio. 

We expect the updated course to be available by early summer, but feel free to start working on the requirements now. Please reach out to abatra@umd.edu with any questions. 

The TLTC is committed to fostering inclusive climates for learning and teaching. We strive to help instructors learn about and integrate inclusive pedagogies in their courses and consider the ways in which they can create equitable, accessible, welcoming, and positive classroom climates for students of all backgrounds and abilities.

Program Outcomes:

1. Name and discuss dimensions of your identity, privileges, and authority and define how they impact the dynamics and interactions in your classroom.
2. Reflect on how our identities, experiences, privilege, and authority shape our teaching practices and impact our students’ engagement, learning, and sense of belonging to the discipline and in the classroom.
3. Develop practices that acknowledge, mitigate, and address structural and social inequities, micro- and macro-aggressions, and implicit biases to create more inclusive interactions and a more productive learning environment.
4. Recognize the complexity of inclusive and equitable pedagogies and practices; Embrace the process of ongoing growth and development.
5. Articulate your stance and approach to inclusive teaching practices (this includes the creation of a DEI statement including reflection, acknowledgment, practices, and directions for continued growth)

To complete IPP Certificate, participants will:

• Take 5 core* workshops & complete post-workshop reflections
• Choose 3 elective** workshops
• Attend a minimum of 2 reflection circle sessions

*Core workshops include topics such as Identity, Power, and Privilege in the Classroom, Anti-Racist Pedagogy, Dialogic Pedagogy, Difficult Dialogues, and Decentering Whiteness.

**Elective workshops include topics such as: Creating a Positive Classroom Climate, Universal Design for Learning, Responding to Bias in the Classroom, Trauma-Informed Pedagogy, Intersectional Pedagogy, Neurodiversity in the Classroom, Transparency in Learning and Teaching, and more.

Reflection circles are live sessions, either in-person or over Zoom, where program participants are joined by TLTC staff to discuss workshop content, ask questions, and be in community with others doing this work.

Civic Engagement Across the Curriculum

Civic Engagement Across the Curriculum (CEAC) at UMD is a new professional development program designed to support the integration of civic engagement experiences into any planned or designed course.

This experience is made possible by a grant from the University System of Maryland and in partnership with Salisbury University's Institute for Public Affairs & Civic Engagement (PACE). The UMD program is presented by the Teaching and Learning Transformation Center (TLTC), Maryland Democracy Initiative (MDI), Leadership and Community Service-Learning (LCSL), and the Common Ground Dialogue Program.
