In this workshop, we will focus on the factors that influence student motivation and whether specific teaching and learning approaches can foster student motivation. One of the most common questions that faculty ask is “How can I motivate my students to learn?” The best answer is “it depends” since motivation is a complex human characteristic that is affected by external and internal factors that are influenced by cultural and situational components. The workshop will focus on recent findings by the National Academies report “How People Learn II." Participants are encouraged to come with questions, ideas, and approaches, which affect student motivation in positive or negative ways.
