Beginning in Fall 2017, the campus will have a suite of twelve exceptional collaborative classrooms ready for use in the new Edward St John Learning and Teaching Center. Combined with the existing “TERP” (Teach, Engage, Respond, Participate) rooms in Tawes and in a few other locations, our inventory of newly designed collaborative general purpose classrooms will grow to over 20 (out of a total of 320 general purpose classrooms across campus). The rooms are designed to support a range of active learning teaching practices, with an emphasis on students working together in small teams. If you would like to teach in one of these rooms, you should contact your scheduler and provide a short statement explaining why you wish to use a TERP room and how the course design will utilize the room’s special capabilities. The Registrar’s office will work with the Teaching and Learning Transformation Center (TLTC) to prioritize scheduling of TERP rooms with this information. These classrooms will be scheduled on the standard time grid (MWF for 50 minutes on the hour, TTh for 75 minutes) and to the full capacity whenever possible.
If your class is scheduled in one of the TERP rooms, you will be asked to participate in one of several assessment activities so that the classroom design team may learn from your experience. Possibilities for participation include: (a) a survey of your students regarding their reaction to and use of the room’s facilities/arrangements; (b) a visit to your class to observe how you and your students are interacting with the space; and (c) round-table discussion(s) about what’s working, what’s not, and what could be improved in the rooms.
