Canvas Teaching Tips

Welcome to our Canvas Teaching Tips! We will continue to update this page with various resources and tips to help you navigate and use Canvas in your courses.

Excusing a Student from an Assignment

In four steps, you can use the Gradebook to excuse a student from an assignment, discussion, or quiz. Excused assignments are not calculated as part of a student's total grade. When an assignment is excused, the assignment page and the student grade page will show the student that he or she has been excused from the assignment.

  1. In Course Navigation, click the Grades link.

Open Grades

2. Locate the student and the assignment you want to excuse.

Select Assignment

3.  In the Gradebook cell, type EX. Then press the Enter key.

Excuse Assignment

4. View that the assignment has been excused for the student.

Send a Message to Students from the Gradebook

You can use the Gradebook to send messages to your students. Message subjects are filtered based on specific assignment categories:

  1. Haven't submitted yet—students who haven't submitted the assignment. This category does not include students who have been manually awarded a grade, even if they did not submit the assignment. Once a grade has been awarded for an assignment (either automatically or manually), Canvas no longer verifies actual submissions.

  2. Haven't been graded—students whose assignments have not yet been graded (submitted or unsubmitted).

  3. Scored less than [point value]—students who earned a grade on their assignment less than X number of points.

  4. Scored more than [point value]—students who earned a grade on their assignment more than X number of points.

Although one message most likely will be sent to multiple students at the same time, each student will receive an individual message.

In Course Navigation, click the Grades link.

Open Gradebook

In the Gradebook, hover over the assignment title and click the drop-down menu [1]. Click the Message Students Who... link [2].

Message Students

By default, Canvas will show names from the Haven't submitted yet category.

In the drop-down menu [1], select the category of students you want to message. Based on real-time data, Canvas will show the names of the students who fall in the category you selected [2]. You can also remove students from the message by clicking the Remove icon. Canvas will also generate a subject line based on the category [3], but you can edit the subject line if needed.

Select Message Category

Type a message to the students in the message field [1]. Click the Send Message button [2].

Note: Although one message most likely will be sent to multiple students at the same time, each student will receive an individual message.
